Great Day at the Lake

March 9th, 2010

The Great Day at the Lake
Posted 3/4/2010 9:35 AM CST

I’m thinking Sheboygan should have a wild card day this summer. Fourth of July rules like bonfires and pits on the beach, yet on a completely random day chosen by the Mayor.

The Mayor simply sends a twitter message declaring It’s a Great Day at the lake, the world retweets and texts the message, a link to a youtube video detailing the event is included, and the masses are mobilized for a flashmob super day of all that is Sheboygan County. No worries about weather, no advance tickets, just a great day at the lake.

Johnsonville could fire up the big grill, Old Wisconsin and Miesfelds could go old school, and Sparky could move his cart into position if he wants. Ty Gutschow and the boys from Larry’s could setup the beer pumps, Sargento could pimp cheese, you get the idea. Musicians would be encouraged to come out and play, drum circles could be formed, and coffee could flow.

Cost would be minimal because it’s a great day, no tents needed, no advertising, it’s a great day. Sheboygan’s miles of lakeshore would be showcased for the world to see. We could crowdsource a website documenting the day and the public could go live on our cable access. The whole thing can be cost neutral and potentially go to retiring municipal debt, the bottom line is nobody profits directly but the citizens. Companies that participate would find numerous benefits and would be allowed to recoup costs if they would like, or good will and notoriety.

Thousands of people could drive golf balls into the big lake, local businesses could sponsor cheesy contests and we could all have a great day. Crime would drop because nobody wants to be in lockup and miss the great day. Local products could be showcased as sculptures for the day and I, for one would have a great day.

This is a win, win, win, win situation, nobody has to participate, yet, this could be a modern day Woodstock on the water.

Puking Incident Determines Wing King

January 31st, 2010
Pride Comes Before Puke

Pride Comes Before Puke

The pride of Neenah, Wisconsin, Justin Franken has just started a mental victory lap. This man-bear devoured his  tray of medium garlic wings, a feat no other man accomplished this day.  On the left, Wabeno Legend, Todd Veeser has accomplished saturation, while  Lou Hoefs reaps the rewards of chewing through a mountain of Wings, while knocking down 1-2-3-4, I said 4 bottles of beer, go Shawano!

ICU Bar & Grill in Neenah provided Justins Wardrobe, and that “Hey There Boo Boo” smile, that’s pride. All the standard words of encouragement echoed from the crowd. C’mon dad, alright dude were surely said, but tray 2 was not another tray 1, it was tray 2.  Dexter wondered why he was called in, clearly the RED fluid was Scary Larry’s, Legend Larry Brand registered trademark Wing Sauce.

“These are hot”

The part of the hippo will be played by Justin Francken, a rack of wings serves as the dart. Consume or be consumed, two or more brain cells process the information, Justin utters, “these are hot”. By design, Justin removes meat from bone, ingests, repeats, words are for after eating, Justin knows the game is changing, Justin – hippo, hippo-Justin. The victory lap is well under way for our friend Justin, the stage has cleared, only Justin remains.

Our Hippo

Our Hippo

What’s your name?, I ask Justin, he replies, rRrrRRrrr or something like that as his buddies talk our hero through the process of swallowing his last mouthful. Stage is cleared, Justin is trapped, alone, mouthful of wings. Swallowing the wings and walking off the stage would ensure victory, as would spitting the mouthful back into the tray. Larry’s marketing dude extraordinaire Mike Willis (“I’m more like Larry’s bitch, but don’t call me that “), enters stage right with Justin’s tray ready for a deposit. Justin, completes his part in Wild Kingdom as he pulls right while calling for  cleanup in aisle 3, chicken wing carcasses exploding towards the floor.

There are two rules in competitive eating and Justin had clearly violated rule #2.

A member of theJustin Francken camp captures the moment for facebook as not just an innocent bystander Scott Seal of Manitowoc unwittingly becomes the king of the wings.

Mark Shurilla’s Rockin’ 50s Party
‘The Day The Music Died’
Saturday, January 30, 2010 7:30 PM

The Wisconsin Area Music Industry’s (WAMI) 2009 ‘Tribute Artist of the Year’, Mark Shurilla, returns by popular demand with his famous tribute to the Winter Dance Party of 1959, a tour that starred Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper, Dion and more. With his band, The Greatest Hits, and an all star cast including Liam Ford (Johnny Cash), John van Thiel (Elvis), Danny J. (“The Pavarotti of Rock”), Jayne Taylor, Marvalous Marla and 4-year-old Sheboygan phenom Valor Yost (‘The Kid in Black’), this cavalcade of stars delivers a spectacular tribute to the ‘Golden Age of Rock and Roll’.

I took that picture about ten years ago at some ballroom.

Bird (Andrew) Whistles in Milwaukee

Andrew Bird

Andrew Bird

Joel Shanahan says a bit about music guy Andrew Bird over at the A.V. Club Milwaukee.

Bird will be whistling at the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee Friday and Saturday and you should go.

Fresh from his second appearance on the Late Show withDavid Letterman and just before his iconization on the Austin City Limits, Andrew whistles good, like a Bird should.

Sporting a violin, guitar and a stable of mates that make “I like it” music all for about the price of a pair of Chuck Taylors.

Check out Andrew’s Letterman performance after the break. the rest of Bird (Andrew) Whistles in Milwaukee

Was I Wrong to Love the Armory?

September 28th, 2009

My dad gave me his ticket so I could see my hero Wilt Chamberlain and the Lakers battle Lew Alcindor and the Bucks in a series the Bucks won on the way to the NBA title. Wilt lost, but outplayed the rookie, the only thing I really remember is laughing with my cousin Randy Kober as my grandpa led the crowd in polka songs during the timeouts, Wilt stopping Lew dead on a dunk attempt and the Bucks winning.

Years later I touched Magic Johnson during the Timberwolves first game at the Metrodome and found myself in the midst of a Spur’s prayer while waiting for my bud’s John Schilling and Bill Zeineman to pee before we “covered” a game at the Target Center. I saw Shaq at LSU, KG as a prep, and home playoff games for the best team in the NBA, the Milwaukee Bucks and Super Sid Moncrief.

When Bo Ryan came to UW-Platteville, I asked him how he was going to take the lowly Pioneer’s to the next level. Bo responded with a story about Tom Desotell, showed me the new locker room and just plain sounded like a winner. That winter Bo was in Sheboygan watching the Optimist tournament at South High School, Bo Knows Basketball, Bo Knows Sheboygan is basketball!

Years earlier I drove to Green Bay Southwest to see Sheboygan South’s Jeff Fessler hit a pair of free throws with no time left to cap off a one point run to the locker room comeback victory that I will never forget. Later that season, North legend Tom Desotell’s, Pete Hopfensberger powered team comeback against a great Koko, Kobelsky, Fessler, and Weaver powered squad at the best place to see a basketball game in the world, The Armory, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

The Sheboygan Municipal Auditorium and Armory, the same building that was home to the NBA Sheboygan Redskins, Harlem Globetrotters original summer camp, and Moose Woltzen’s Lakeland Muskies, whose games I was at before I remember even being me. The same packed Armory that saw Joe Wolf’s shot hit the flag and drop to center court as Kurt Portmann, Troy Rudoll and company at Sheboygan North won a squeaker against The future North Carolina and NBA standout’s Kohler Blue Bombers.

Sheboygan is a basketball town, just ask Jack Gebler, Wally Rekalaitas, Tom Posewitz, John Cinealis, Gordy Zastrow, the rest of Was I Wrong to Love the Armory?

Kohler Bookends on St. Andrews 18th Hole?

September 15th, 2009
Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews - Hamilton Hall

< Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews - Hamilton Hall >

UPDATE: This baby’s part of the Kohler Family as reported at The Scotsman

The big red building on the right, yep, that’s the one Sheboygan County boy, turned American Magnate Herb Kohler is looking to purchase for pounds of money.

When the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews rejected Thomas Hamilton’s application for membership in the 1890s because of his Jewish roots, he built Hamilton Hall, a much taller, more extravagant building almost next door. Things happened, stuff changed and it looks like Mr. Kohler may soon have properties on both ends of St. Andrews vaunted 18th hole. Did I mention Mr Kohler who you might remember as the Innkeeper in Kevin Costner’s western jewel “Open Range” already owns the Old Course Hotel.

What this means is a man that exudes excellence is about to put his mark on another great golf destination. That is if his bid is accepted, there are nine bidders including Kohler, and an outside possibility that a former developer may scuttle the deal.
