Was I Wrong to Love the Armory?

September 28th, 2009

My dad gave me his ticket so I could see my hero Wilt Chamberlain and the Lakers battle Lew Alcindor and the Bucks in a series the Bucks won on the way to the NBA title. Wilt lost, but outplayed the rookie, the only thing I really remember is laughing with my cousin Randy Kober as my grandpa led the crowd in polka songs during the timeouts, Wilt stopping Lew dead on a dunk attempt and the Bucks winning.

Years later I touched Magic Johnson during the Timberwolves first game at the Metrodome and found myself in the midst of a Spur’s prayer while waiting for my bud’s John Schilling and Bill Zeineman to pee before we “covered” a game at the Target Center. I saw Shaq at LSU, KG as a prep, and home playoff games for the best team in the NBA, the Milwaukee Bucks and Super Sid Moncrief.

When Bo Ryan came to UW-Platteville, I asked him how he was going to take the lowly Pioneer’s to the next level. Bo responded with a story about Tom Desotell, showed me the new locker room and just plain sounded like a winner. That winter Bo was in Sheboygan watching the Optimist tournament at South High School, Bo Knows Basketball, Bo Knows Sheboygan is basketball!

Years earlier I drove to Green Bay Southwest to see Sheboygan South’s Jeff Fessler hit a pair of free throws with no time left to cap off a one point run to the locker room comeback victory that I will never forget. Later that season, North legend Tom Desotell’s, Pete Hopfensberger powered team comeback against a great Koko, Kobelsky, Fessler, and Weaver powered squad at the best place to see a basketball game in the world, The Armory, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

The Sheboygan Municipal Auditorium and Armory, the same building that was home to the NBA Sheboygan Redskins, Harlem Globetrotters original summer camp, and Moose Woltzen’s Lakeland Muskies, whose games I was at before I remember even being me. The same packed Armory that saw Joe Wolf’s shot hit the flag and drop to center court as Kurt Portmann, Troy Rudoll and company at Sheboygan North won a squeaker against The future North Carolina and NBA standout’s Kohler Blue Bombers.

Sheboygan is a basketball town, just ask Jack Gebler, Wally Rekalaitas, Tom Posewitz, John Cinealis, Gordy Zastrow, the rest of Was I Wrong to Love the Armory?

South Football

October 11th, 2008

SheVegas  kinda enjoyed Sheboygan South’s homecoming football game, and I think these dudes might agree.

Pulaski dominated a South High team that was simply outhustled and outhammered by a Pulaski team that used an hour and a half bus ride to pump up the volume. Every man on Pulaski’s team played as if every play was the last play they will ever make, while South seemed to be thinking about the victory, the dance or the economy.

Coach Hein and the entire South High School coaching staff are building a solid program and will surely let the film do the talking on Monday. Of course, the team can expect an earful and will probably work harder than they ever imagined they would.

SheVegas will be posting images from the game soon, however it is nice out and things can wait.

Sheboygan Volleyball, North VS South

Red Versus Blue – Drumline Style – Sheboygan

July 22nd, 2008

RedBlue, SouthNorth, Feats and FolliesExpo.

Drumlines, bring your A game to Bratwurst day!

This is not a parade, this is war, banging the drums on Erie Avenue is no dress rehearsal.

Early money is saying the Expo tested tough North High Drumline will pound the snare out of their crosstown rivals.

Word on the street has it the new kids on the block will prove their feats are no folly as the South High Drumline bangs it with the best in the greatest showcase since the mothballing of the Armory in the name of science.

SheVegas would love to see a downtown showdown but the Armory appers to be broken.

Maybe we can get some Iraqi scientists to fix it for us, isn’t this kinda how we “won” the space race after “WWII”.

But we digress, this isn’t about the Armory, this is about bragging rights.

SheVegas will be posting new video from the Fourth of July along with anything and everything we can steal from Youtube and beyond.

Here’s the challenge: Make it, take it, post it. Send a link or pointer to ishevegas@gmail.com and our team of crack snorting monkeys will blast the battle through SheVegas.com

Thats right, pictures, videos, anything you can shove up the tube.

When the brats are gone and the posts are up, SheVegas will open the tubes to voting.

Thats right your vote will decide: Red VS. Blue – Battle for the Brat.

SheVegas and Toro’s (920-458-5581) (Robbie, help me out, ya, shoulda asked first) will be popping out a Trophy for this gramatically incorrect first annual Drumline Beatdown

SheVegas knows this is just a walk to the park for some.

But you my friends, are Drumline

Sheboygan South-North Graduation

June 8th, 2008

One of the “Seven wonders of Shevegas”, Vollrath Bowl in Sheboygan is missing out on one of it’s signature events.

Graduation Day

Super wet and plenty moisture droplets are forcing blue north and red south. Those great big buildings on each side of town get one more day

While the ceremonial nature of this gathering is hard to overlook, graduation serves as one of few non-combative meetings of Sheboygan North And Sheboygan South.

Tensions in the community are on the rise as citizens fear this further seperation of our youth.

Sheboygan South Football Redmen

May 19th, 2008

Best Win Ever – Sheboygan South Football from mike brunette on Vimeo.

The Fox River Valley Classic Conference is tough, Sheboygan South is tough, Redmen tough.

Redwings these days, I dig that in a not really kind of way. No disrespect meant here, but political correctness is nothing more than societal yawning. My dream (and yours) is that birds start talking, bringing this naming thing full circle.

When South is rolling I’m gonna call em Redmen

Redmen = tough or at least angry or sunburned.
