Letters: Council will ‘do what is right’

October 2, 2009

While we respect the right of an editorial board to use its soapbox, we also respectfully disagree with The Sheboygan Press’ editorial calling for Mayor Bob Ryan’s immediate resignation.

We believe the community expects and deserves resolution of these issues. In response to the video, we believe the Common Council should pass a censure expressing disappointment and disapproval. In conjunction with this, our expectation is that Mayor Ryan will publicly outline his personal plan to address the underlying cause of this unfortunate episode. We think the community will be impressed with his manner and commitment.

Significant facts surrounding the written claims of Angela Payne were presented to the Committee of the Whole Tuesday evening in closed session by the attorney investigating the incident on behalf of the city. We are not at liberty to disclose what was said, but we will say this: we believe that the council is currently more engaged, more informed, more resolved and more unified than ever to do what is right for this city on this issue.

While we are disturbed by Mayor Ryan’s actions in the recent video, we recognize that there are two very distinct, separate issues here: a video, but also potentially slanderous accusations with legal ramifications for the city, and also for Ms. Payne.

After Tuesday night, we alderpersons are now burdened with knowing facts that we can’t speak about. So we encourage Sheboyganites to observe the behavior of the alderpersons over the next few weeks. We believe that the council, which usually has a lot of different opinions, will be unified on this specific Payne legal matter. And that should speak more loudly than we ever could as 16 individuals.

sheboygan council Vang Neng Vue

Mayor Bob Ryan was amongst the first to call him Coucilman Vue, a title that Sheboygan’s newly appointed District 2 councilman didn’t respond to.

Sheboygan’s Vang Neng Vue is a worthy man for the position. Even when you drop the race card and reshuffle the deck, Vang, or should I say, Councilman Vue is still that card on top.

His story is so Sheboygan, you would have to invent his character if you wanted to tell the city’s history. Mister Vue is the real deal, a war to poor immigrant, coming to America from a camp in Bangkok, Thailand, Vang picked up the english language before arriving in America, and earned a bachelor’s degree in social welfare from Lakeland College while raising a family in Sheboygan.

“I will be a dedicated servant of all the people of the district, including many Americans from my own culture and other cultures,”

Vang Neng Vue – 2009

Working as a family support specialist for Sheboygan County Head Start and serving on the board of the Hmong Mutual Assistance Association, Vue, a U.S. Citizen since 1993, is married with two sons and two daughters, ages 16 to 20.

Ladies and Gentleman, the President of the Sheboygan Common Council, Jim Bohren.
